HYDRAULICS-THE SCIENCE OF LIQUID IN MOTION (by Jean Dell'Amore)

Our President, Jean DellAmore likes to remind everyone that we sell hydraulic products and buyers buy hydraulic products but actually very few people understand how hydraulics work.  Hydraulics is a very old science and has been around since the beginning of time.

Quite simply the science of hydraulics is based around the simple notion that a liquid, under confinement, can be used to transmit pressure, increase or decrease pressure, and can also transmit motion.  As we all know from our everyday life, air is compressible but liquids cannot be compressed.

It is this basic fact that defines the science of hydraulics.

Stertil-Koni mobile column lifts work on the principle that liquids can increase force.  When a force is applied to piston A (diagram 1) it can be increased if it is transmitted to a larger piston B.  If Piston A has a surface area of 1 Square inch, the 200 lb. force on piston A represents a pressure of 200 lbs. per square inch (psi.).

If piston B has a surface area of 20 sq. inc., piston A will exert a 200 lb. force on each square inch of piston B.  This would produce a mechanical advantage of twenty, and the original 200 lb. force would be increased to 4,000 lbs.

The force may be further increased by either making piston A smaller, or by making piston B larger.

CUSTOMER SPOTLIGHT

Anne Arundel Department of Public Works

Anne Arundel (1615-1649), a member of the ancient family of Arundells in Cornwall, England, and the wife of Caecilius Calvert, 2nd Baron of Baltimore could not imagine that one of the fastest growing counties in the United States would be named after her.  Annapolis, Maryland is the county seat for Anne Arundel County and boasts as the fourth wealthiest counties in the country.

Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works is also home for Bryan Stubbins, Shop Supervisor for Northern District Roads, who has been with the county for 12 years.   He works on snow plow dump trucks, sewer trucks, sweepers and tractors.  In 2007 he received one set of the Stertil-Koni battery operated mobile column lifts.

When asked why he purchased from Stertil-Koni he responded: "The safety, efficiency and employee comfort were vastly improved with the addition of the economical portable truck lifting equipment. In addition Stertil-Koni was the only certified battery operated mobile columns lifts; they take 5 minutes to hook up and load, and we do not have to worry about a power cord getting in the way or sitting on the ground getting wet from snow and/or rain.  The portable lifts require no modification to existing buildings or electrical power supplies-a big plus!"

DISTRIBUTOR SPOTLIGHT

It was in March of 1992 when I started Talon Industries.  Later that year a friend called and told me that they needed some lifts that would "roll" around their shop.  He had some old washtronics/transpo lifts.  I went to the library and after some research, found several manufacturers of that style of lift.  I contacted these manufacturers and found that Sefac was the one most anxious to do business with me.  My friend's company bought 3 sets of Sefac Mobiles.  After I received a commission check for this sale, I thought DAMN, this isn't too bad and my new adventure of selling heavy duty lifts began.

In October of 1999, my wife Sherry and I attended the APTA show in Orlando.  It was there that I spotted a lift that I wanted to sell, the Stertil-Koni ST-4250 4 post drive-on hoist.  There was nothing like it in the market and I could see the need for it in our part of the country.  That is when Jean DellAmore approached Sherry about becoming a Stertil- Koni distributor for the Pacific Northwest.  It took some convincing for Sherry to leave her comfort zone but she started LiftLogic, Inc., a totally woman owned business in November of 1999.  I resigned from Sefac that same year and our 8 year relationship with Koni began.

Sherry and I have traveled our territory (Alaska, B.C., Washington, Oregon, Idaho and parts of Wyoming and Montana).  As our business and demands on our time grew, we added 4 more sales people to sell Stertil-Koni equipment.  We are based in Portland, Oregon.

I am a 58 year old 5th generation Oregonian (Sherry is a 6th generation).    I grew up in a small logging community in Jewell, Oregon.  Our closest neighbor was 2 miles away and yes, we did have indoor plumbing.

Sherry and I have our 13th anniversary coming up.  Sherry has two sons that are established with their own families and I have two that are still in college, both in engineering.  We have 5 grandchildren (still don't like being called grandpa) and adore them.  I enjoy golf and fly-fishing. We tent camp and hike in the Willamette National Forest whenever we can escape the call of work.

By the way, I was the first distributor to sell that ST-4250 4 post lift.  It was my first Koni sale. The 4250 was and still is a great piece of equipment as is all of the Stertil-Koni equipment.  I believe that Stertil-Koni offers the best equipment in the heavy duty field.

We enjoy being a part of the Stertil-Koni family of distributors, all of whom can and should be very proud of their contributions in helping this company grow into what it is today.

CHILDREN INTERNATIONAL

Our President, Jean Dell’Amore has been sponsoring children through the worldwide organization, Children International since 1996. Jean sponsors five girls aged 5-13 in Ecuador, the Philippines, the Dominican Republic, Chile, and Colombia.

Children International works to help impoverished children around the world overcome the hurdles of poverty by helping them become healthy, educated and productive members of society.  Their primary focus is on improving the health and education of poor children by providing them with the tools they need to lead happy and healthy lives.

For $22 per month (less on what we spend for a dinner at an average restaurant) you can sponsor a child.  Right now, they are in dire need of more people to sponsor more children.  Incredibly, there is a waiting list of over 23,000 children waiting for sponsors.  You can contact Children International by going on their web-site www.children.org.  A representative from Children International will be at the upcoming Stertil-Koni distributor meeting featuring mobile column lifts, parallelogram lifts, truck lifts, bus lifts, and all types of hydraulic lifts.
